Our Story

Textile designer Jennifer Carr grew up in the Lochalsh area of the west Highlands and has always worked in the creative industry both as a maker and in retail. When not in the shop she can usually be found drinking tea or making the most of the exceptional location, either on the hills with her dogs Freddie and Luna, or pottering about on her paddleboard.

Growing up, Paterson's Toy Shop was legendary amongst the children of the area and a cornerstone for the community. It holds so many happy memories for so many people and it feels an honour that the building is now the home of ooshke.

What’s in a name?

How should we pronounce it?

OO SH K    /u:ɒʃk /

What does it mean?

- an ancient Norse dialect loosely translated as - “the key is to keep company only with the people who uplift you.”

Ok, so it’s not really - that’s a great Epictetus quote but the sentiment fits.

To be surrounded by beautiful things that carry the passion of the inspiring creative makers has a truly positive and uplifting effect.

Although ooshke. is a made up word, it has a similar sound to the Gaelic “Uisge”, which is quite apt given ooshke's coastal location and the influence the blue skies and sea have.
